Getting Started in Astrophotography

Astrophotography can be a very enjoyable and rewarding hobby, and if you have ever contemplated trying it, here are some helpful links to resources that can get you started.

A great book that every astronomy enthusiast should have is the "Backyard Astronomer's Guide" by Terence Dickinson and Alan Dyer. In this book, they have a chapter with an excellent discussion of astrophotography, suitable for the beginner. Even if you don't decide to pursue astrophotography, this book is still worth it as it covers so many topics of interest to the amateur astronomer. A link to their web page for more information and updates is:

If you are thinking of doing astrophotography with a DSLR, a great resource that describes the processes and equipment needed is Jerry Lodriguss' book "A Guide to Astrophotography with Digital SLR Cameras." You can get more infomation from his web site at: http://www.astropix.com/

There are many great DSLR astrophotographers who post their images on the web. For inspiration and to show what can be accomplished with DSLR cameras, a site worth checking out is Ivan Eder's astrophotography web site at: http://eder.csillagaszat.hu/en.htm
